All Things Salsa: A Montreal Salsa Convention Prep Guide

Posted on May 01 2018

The hottest event of the summer is BACK. Yes, the Montreal Salsa Convention is ready to burn up the floor for its 14th edition. And we. Cannot. Wait.

So we’ve put together a “Preparation Guide” to help get you oriented in all things Salsa (the dance, not the dip). Read on!

This year the Montreal Salsa Convention will be turning up the heat at the Hyatt Regency Hotel from May 17th to the 21st 2018. It’s all Latin, all the time, with tons of workshops offered in Salsa, Bachata, Zouk, Kizomba, and more. There are free activities (shows as well as dance classes), competitions for amateurs and pros, and dancing all night with some of the hottest DJs such as Henry Knowles from New York, Sam Haddad from Montreal, and DJ Ly also from Montreal (our local talent is HOT. Just sayin’.).

Adding to the lineup are some hot hot HOT National and International stars, like Paulina Posada from Montreal, Jose Sandoval from Ottawa,  Ahtoy from Miami, and Tito and Tamara from Puerto Rico. And these are only some of the names in attendance. Seriously. Get your tickets, people.

Other highlights include a live salsa band for dancing Thursday night -- none other than Trabuco Habanero -- a special 5 à 7 on Friday, a Gala Show Saturday night, and National/International Shows Sunday night. And to close it off, there's a BBQ on Monday from noon to 5:00pm. On the roof of the Hyatt. With a DJ. When else are you going to get to dance on the roof of the Hyatt? You don’t want to miss this!

The event is hosted by the Canadian Salsa Dance Corporation a non–profit organization that promotes music, dance, and Latin culture while bringing together a multi-ethnic audience. Their goal is to inform and educate amateur artists as well as semi-professional dancers, and to provide a networking space for the developing artist.

And we’ll be there. For all of it. Our booth will be located at the Complexe Desjardins venue on Friday May 18th, Saturday May 19th, and Sunday May 20th. Come talk salsa and dance shoes with us -- we’ll help you find that perfect customized pair that will take your dancing to the next level.

If you are new to Salsa dancing, you’re going to need shoes. And choosing the right pair of Salsa shoes is different from choosing street shoes. If you’re wondering what the differences are and why those differences matter, check out How to Choose the Right Salsa Shoe. Let us help you find that perfect fit!

There is not just one style of Salsa. There is not just one place of origin. Salsa has a rich and varied culture and if you’d like to learn more, check out Hot Hot HOT: A Look at the Origins of Salsa

About the author

Anna Humphrey
Author and Dancer
Anna thinks she might have been born dancing. She spent several years as a ballerina and is now in love with ballroom dancing...and just a little obsessed with Tango and Viennese Waltz and Bolero and Peabody and...all of it, really. Her studio is her home away from home. When not dancing, she can be found reading, writing, and traveling. And drinking copious amounts of tea.
