Off to See the Wizard!: The Tulip Classic 2018

Posted on May 31 2018

Dancers! Dust off your ruby slippers (the Wicked Witch of the West didn’t get them, did she?) and pack your bags, because this year the Tulip Classic Championship is headed down the yellow brick road to Oz! (By way of Niagara Falls, don’t worry)

This year’s extravaganza will be held from Wednesday June 6th through Sunday June 10th in the shared ballroom of the Sheraton On the Falls and the Crowne Plaza on the Falls. The Tulip Classic is one of the biggest in the history of Ontario’s dance scene. Dancers come from over 25 states and provinces across North America and sixty percent of attendees are American. Organizers estimate that there will be about 500 people per day in the ballroom both on and off the floor. It’s a show you won’t want to miss.

Wednesday’s celebrations are for VIP package holders and run all day long. It will culminate in a Chocolate and Champagne welcome party for all from 8pm to 10 pm...and fireworks over the Falls.

Thursday is the first day of competition. All Pro-Am rhythm takes place until dinner, with special Night Club challenges from 7pm onwards. Friday is the day for Standard and Latin, with Silver show dances and Country Multi-Dance challenges after dinner. Saturday is when Smooth dancers get a chance to shine, as do those dancing show dances at the Bronze and Gold levels. The pro show begins at 8pm in all four divisions: Standard, Latin, Rhythm, and Smooth. The final day, Sunday, is the day for amateur couples in Standard and Latin to close off what will surely have been an unforgettable four days.

If you’re new to the Tulip Classic then you are in for a treat! Every year the TC offers attendees the option to dress up according to different themes. And this year looks like way too much fun. Wednesday’s VIP events are business casual with optional Fascinators Hats and white gloves for ladies. Thursday evening is Hollywood Club versus Retro Club. What does that mean? Show up as your favourite Hollywood star/character...or bust out all those bright colours and shoulder pads you have left over from the 70s and 80s (you know they’re somewhere in your closet). The theme for Friday evening is Cowboy Country versus Steampunk Cowboy. Denim, boots, cowboy hats...or add a steampunk twist. Your choice! (1) And Saturday...well, Saturday you are invited to the Emerald City Masquerade in your best Wizard of Oz costume (2). And if dressing up as a flying monkey isn’t your thing, then use your imagination and invent your own character who might exist in Oz. Or if you’re feeling more relaxed, dazzle us with your formal wear and sparkly shoes. Either way, it will be a night to remember!

And naturally, iLoveDanceShoes will be there! We’ll have a booth on site from 8:00am to 10:00pm Thursday, June 7th to Saturday, June 9th. Sunday, June 10th we'll be there from 8:00am to 1:00pm. We’ll have our collection with us...including some new models that haven’t yet been featured in our catalogue! We can’t wait to show them off. We have something for everyone from beginners to pros, from practice shoes to competition shoes to dance shoes for a night out on the town. We’ll be happy to answer all your questions about size and customization so that you can find the perfect shoe to showcase your steps.

Here are some of most popular models (click on the image to go to the product page):

And just in case you wanted a pair of shoes like Dorothy...we can do that. Just sayin’.

So what are you waiting for? Get your tickets, get your sparkle and come see us in Niagara. We’re looking forward to talking with you!

See you on the floor.

(1) If you have no idea what we mean by “Steampunk”, check out the following article on Wikipedia: Steampunk is awesome.

(2) Best part about that movie? Dorothy’s slippers. I want them.
